Industrial molding machines — injection presses, compression presses, transfer presses, and Banbury-type rubber mixers — sat at the heart of every plastic and rubber processing plant of the asbestos era. Workers who set up, operated, maintained, and rebuilt these machines were exposed to asbestos in heating cylinders, mold platens, steam jackets, gasket sealing surfaces, and the insulation wrapped around hot-oil and steam process piping that served the press lines.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos litigation that injection molding presses manufactured by Reed-Prentice (Division of Package Machinery Co.), HPM Corporation (Hydraulic Press Manufacturing Co.), Stokes Machinery Co., Watson Stillman, Farrel Corporation (and Farrel-Birmingham), Cincinnati Milacron, Van Dorn, Battenfeld, and other major manufacturers shipped with asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and packing materials specified for use on the heated process surfaces of the machines.
Process aftermarket suppliers such as IMS (Injection Molders Supply Co.) also supplied asbestos-insulated replacement cylinders and band heaters for the most common injection-molder models.
