Ameren Corporation — Corporate Overview

Ameren Corporation was formed in 1997 by the merger of Union Electric Company (headquartered in St. Louis MO) and Central Illinois Public Service (CIPS, headquartered in Springfield IL), later joined by Central Illinois Light Company (CILCO, headquartered in Peoria IL). Today Ameren operates as an integrated electric and natural-gas utility through two principal subsidiaries: Ameren Missouri (formerly Union Electric), serving eastern Missouri including the St. Louis metropolitan area; and Ameren Illinois (the CIPS + CILCO combination), serving downstate Illinois. Ameren’s generation fleet has historically included coal-fired baseload plants, natural-gas peakers, hydroelectric stations, and the Callaway nuclear station.

Premises Description

Ameren and its predecessors (Union Electric, CIPS, CILCO) have been named as premises defendants in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation for alleged asbestos exposure across their powerhouses, substations, and service centers throughout Missouri and Illinois.

Ameren coal-fired and natural-gas-fired powerhouses were heavy industrial premises: boiler halls, turbine halls, pulverizer floors, precipitator and scrubber decks, coal-handling systems, cooling towers, transmission and distribution substations, and service centers. Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that pre-1980 Ameren / Union Electric / CIPS / CILCO premises allegedly involved asbestos through:

  • Asbestos-block boiler lagging on powerhouse steam generators
  • Asbestos-refractory boiler firebox and pulverizer linings
  • Asbestos-fabric expansion joints on steam ducts and precipitator inlets
  • Asbestos-packed steam-valve and control-valve stems
  • Asbestos-fabric arc chute plates in substation switchgear
  • Asbestos-cement transformer bulkhead panels
  • Sprayed asbestos fireproofing on turbine-hall structural steel (pre-1973 EPA ban)
  • Asbestos sheet gaskets at boiler, header, turbine, and process-piping flanges
  • Asbestos pipe covering on boiler feedwater, main steam, and auxiliary steam piping

Workers Exposed

Plaintiffs allegedly worked at Ameren / Union Electric / CIPS / CILCO powerhouses, substations, and service centers across Missouri and Illinois in trades including:

  • Boilermakers rebuilding asbestos-refractory-lined boilers and pulverizers
  • Insulators (HFIAW) applying and removing asbestos block and pipe covering on boilers and steam headers
  • Pipefitters (UA) breaking asbestos-gasketed flanges on boiler drums, headers, and main steam piping
  • Millwrights rebuilding asbestos-packed feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, and forced-draft fans
  • Electricians (IBEW) on asbestos arc chutes and transformer bulkhead panels in switchgear
  • Sheet metal workers (SMART) on asbestos-fabric expansion joints and precipitator ductwork
  • Plant operators and maintenance mechanics around asbestos-fireproofed turbine halls
