Conwed Corporation

Conwed Corporation (originally Wood Conversion Company, later Conwed Designscape) manufactured acoustical ceiling tile, mineral fiber ceiling panels, and related building products. From the post-WWII construction boom through the 1970s, Conwed acoustical products commonly contained chrysotile asbestos as a binder and reinforcing fiber.

Conwed ceiling products were installed in schools, hospitals, office buildings, and commercial structures throughout the United States. Workers — including ceiling installers, sheet metal workers, electricians, telecom workers, and building maintenance personnel — encountered asbestos exposure during installation, repair, demolition, and routine disturbance of the ceiling panels.

Litigation History

Conwed has been a named defendant in product-liability lawsuits brought by workers, families, and building occupants who developed mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis following exposure to Conwed acoustical products. Court records and historical product literature document the asbestos content of pre-1980 Conwed ceiling tile.
