Inland Steel Company — Corporate Overview
Inland Steel Company (1893-1998) was one of the great American integrated steel producers, headquartered in Chicago IL and defined by its flagship Indiana Harbor Works at East Chicago IN on the southern shore of Lake Michigan — for decades one of the largest integrated steel mills in North America, and at its peak among the very largest by tonnage. Founded 1893 in Chicago Heights IL, the firm relocated primary steelmaking to the Indiana Harbor site beginning 1901 and grew into a fully integrated iron-and-steel operation with coke ovens, blast furnaces, open-hearth and later BOF steelmaking, hot-strip and cold-reduction mills, and finishing lines all concentrated on a single Lake Michigan campus.
Principal Inland operations included the No. 7 blast furnace (commissioned 1980 — at that time the largest blast furnace in North America), the Indiana Harbor Works BOF steelmaking shop, the 80-inch hot-strip mill, cold-reduction mills, tin plate and galvanizing lines, and the Chicago Heights IL rolling mill and by-products operations. In 1998, Inland Steel was acquired by Ispat International N.V. and renamed Ispat Inland Inc.; through Ispat’s 2004 combination with LNM Holdings and its 2006 merger with Arcelor, the Indiana Harbor Works became part of ArcelorMittal, and today operates as Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor.
Documented ACM Footprint
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Inland Steel Company — and its Indiana Harbor Works operations — exposed the mill workforce to asbestos through the following documented pathways:
- Integrated mill asbestos-refractory brick and monolithic castable allegedly used in Indiana Harbor blast furnace hearths, open-hearth and BOF steelmaking vessels, and reheat furnace linings
- Asbestos-fabric ladle covers allegedly used above hot-metal transfer ladles and teeming ladles across open-hearth and BOF operations
- Asbestos-block lagging allegedly applied to reheat furnace walls, soaking pit covers, and coke oven doors at the Indiana Harbor coke and hot-mill complexes
- Asbestos pipe covering allegedly installed on steam mains, hot-water and process piping across the Indiana Harbor mill and on powerhouse steam and turbine piping
- Asbestos-gasket materials allegedly used at flanges throughout blast-furnace stove piping, BOF hood ductwork, and coke oven byproducts recovery lines
- Asbestos-cement roofing and siding allegedly used on mill outbuildings during mid-20th-century Indiana Harbor and Chicago Heights construction
Workers Allegedly Exposed

- Insulators (HFIAW) applying and stripping asbestos pipe covering and block on Indiana Harbor mill steam distribution and powerhouse piping
- Pipefitters (UA) and boilermakers breaking asbestos-gasketed flanges on mill piping and rebuilding powerhouse boilers at Indiana Harbor
- Millwrights and mechanical maintenance rebuilding hot-strip mill drives, reheat furnace pushers, and coke oven mechanicals
