Ammonia Compressors — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk

What This Equipment Is

Ammonia (NH₃) compressors are the heart of large industrial refrigeration systems — the kind that keep breweries, meatpacking plants, food-processing facilities, ice plants, and cold-storage warehouses cold. In a brewery, the ammonia compressor runs continuously to chill fermentation tanks, lagering cellars, and product storage to 32–36°F.

Industrial ammonia compressors are big, heavy, hot at the discharge side, cold at the suction side, and historically wrapped in thermal insulation on both. They also use packing material around the rotating shaft to keep ammonia from leaking.
