Bottle Washers (Returnable-Bottle Cleaning Lines) — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk

What This Equipment Is

A bottle washer is a large continuous-conveyor cleaning machine used in returnable-bottle packaging lines. Bottles enter dirty, pass through multiple caustic-soak zones at controlled temperature, get scrubbed with rotating spray nozzles and brushes, rinse through fresh-water sprays, and exit clean and warm onto the filling line.

A large brewery bottle washer can process tens of thousands of bottles per hour and contain multiple compartments of hot caustic solution heated by steam-coil heat exchangers. Steam supply piping, caustic-recirculation pumps, rinse-water headers, drain piping, and the heated tank exteriors all required asbestos-bearing insulation, gaskets, and packing during the asbestos-product era.

Why Bottle-Washer Work Was an Asbestos Exposure Pathway

Bottle washers run continuously during packaging runs and require regular maintenance during shutdown windows. Steam-coil heat-exchanger failures, caustic-pump rebuilds, conveyor maintenance, and rotating-spray-nozzle service all involve breaking flanges, repacking valves, and disturbing surrounding insulation.
