Brine Chillers — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk

What This Equipment Is

A brine chiller is a shell-and-tube heat exchanger that uses a primary refrigerant (ammonia, freon, or modern HFC) to cool a secondary refrigerant — historically calcium-chloride brine or, in later systems, glycol-water mix. The chilled secondary refrigerant then distributes through insulated piping to remote cooling loads: brewery fermentation and lagering tanks, packing-house cold rooms, ice plants, dairy plants, food-processing cold storage.

Brine chillers operate at the cold side of the refrigeration plant (typically 20–35°F). They are wrapped in heavy cold-side insulation designed to prevent condensation and sweating. They have flanged tube-bundle heads, gasketed manways, and stuffing-box-packed shut-off valves on the brine, refrigerant, and drain connections.
