HVAC Filter Cells & Air-Cell Insulation — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk

What This Equipment Is

Commercial and institutional HVAC systems use filter cells — rectangular filter media frames stacked in air-handling units to clean recirculating and outside air before distribution. From the 1940s through the late 1970s, selected high-temperature and high-performance filter applications used asbestos-fiber-bearing filter media:

  • High-temperature furnace and boiler air-supply filters
  • Specialty industrial filtration applications
  • Selected hospital surgical-suite filtration (early HEPA-equivalent designs)

A related product family — “Air-Cell” duct insulation — was a corrugated paper-and-asbestos product wrapped around HVAC ductwork for thermal control. Johns-Manville’s Air-Cell product line was widely specified in commercial and institutional HVAC installations through the 1970s (see Duct Insulation for related material).

Why HVAC Filter / Insulation Work Was an Asbestos Exposure Pathway

Filter changes in legacy systems disturb the asbestos-bearing filter media — pulling out the spent filter, releasing fiber-laden dust from the accumulated load, and installing a fresh filter (which, in modern replacement, is no longer asbestos-bearing).

Air-Cell duct insulation removal during HVAC renovation disturbs the corrugated paper structure and releases legacy chrysotile from decades of installation.

Air-handling-unit rebuilds — replacing fans, coils, and filter racks — expose surrounding insulation systems.
