Pasteurizer Tunnels (Brewery & Beverage) — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk

What This Equipment Is

A tunnel pasteurizer is a long conveyor-driven enclosure where sealed bottles or cans pass through a series of hot-water spray zones to heat-kill spoilage organisms in the packaged product. In a large brewery the tunnel can be 60 to 120+ feet long, processing tens of thousands of bottles or cans per hour. Soft-drink, juice, and beverage bottlers use similar equipment.

The tunnel is steam-heated via heat exchangers serving the recirculating hot-water spray system. Steam supply piping, hot-water headers, heat exchangers, condensate-return, and CIP (clean-in-place) piping all run heated and were historically insulated and gasketed using the same asbestos product families documented elsewhere in this catalog.

Why Pasteurizer-Tunnel Work Was an Asbestos Exposure Pathway

Pasteurizer maintenance — heat-exchanger cleaning and tube repair, conveyor maintenance, CIP-system valve work — involves the standard sequence: strip insulation, break gaskets, access internals, rebuild, re-insulate. Pipefitters and brewers’ mechanics performing this work routinely encountered legacy fiber from pre-1980s insulation work.
