Refractory Mortar & Castable — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk
What This Equipment Is
Refractory linings are not just brick. The brick is set in mortar, gaps are patched with castable, and irregular surfaces are sprayed with gunnite. All three product families historically included formulations that used asbestos fiber as a reinforcing additive — particularly in the insulating refractory category (lower-density, lower-temperature back-up linings) where the fiber controlled cracking during dry-out and thermal cycling.
These materials are found in: boiler furnaces, cement kilns, glass furnaces, steel-mill ladles and tundishes, foundry cupolas, direct-fired brewery kettles, incinerators, and process heaters.
Why Refractory Mortar / Castable Work Was a High-Exposure Activity
Refractory work is wet-mixed on-site. The dry product arrives in bags, is dumped into a mixer or hopper, water-blended to a workable consistency, and either troweled (mortar), poured (castable), or sprayed (gunnite). The bag-opening and dry-mixing stage is the high-exposure moment — fine refractory dust and any asbestos fiber go airborne in the worker’s breathing zone.
Tear-out of cured refractory mortar and castable produces a second exposure: jackhammers and chipping guns break the dried matrix and release the bound fiber.
