Soot Blowers — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk
What This Equipment Is
A soot blower is an automated cleaning device installed through the boiler furnace wall. On a scheduled cycle it extends a long lance into the furnace, rotates while blowing high-pressure steam (or compressed air) through nozzles at the tip, and retracts. The blasted media knocks accumulated ash and slag off boiler tubes — essential for maintaining heat transfer in coal- and oil-fired boilers.
A typical utility boiler has 30 to 80 soot blowers distributed across the furnace, superheater, reheater, economizer, and air-heater sections. The lance passes through a wall box in the furnace casing, with packing around the lance to seal hot flue gas from leaking out, and gaskets at the wall-box flange.
Asbestos Products Historically Used Around Soot Blowers
| Product Category | Where on the Soot Blower | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lance shaft packing | Wall-box stuffing box | Braided asbestos rope, replaced each maintenance cycle |
| Wall-box gaskets | Wall-box-to-casing flange | Asbestos sheet, high-temperature millboard |
| Pipe covering | Steam supply piping | Magnesia, calcium silicate |
| Asbestos millboard | Lance guide bushings, wall-box back-up | High-temperature sheet |
| Insulating cement | Wall-box-to-casing transitions | Mixed dry, hand-applied |
Why Soot-Blower Work Was a High-Exposure Activity
Soot-blower lances wear from heat and from the high-velocity steam flow inside them. Wall-box packing burns out and leaks. The maintenance cycle — sometimes annual, sometimes more frequent — means repeated work disturbing packing, gaskets, and surrounding insulation across dozens of soot blowers per outage. Workers on soot-blower-rebuild crews could spend full outages performing the same repacking and gasket-replacement sequence repeatedly.
