Unibestos Pipe Covering & Block (Pittsburgh Corning) — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk
What This Equipment Is
Unibestos was Pittsburgh Corning Corporation’s flagship asbestos pipe covering and block insulation product family. Pittsburgh Corning manufactured Unibestos from approximately 1962 through 1972 at plants in Tyler, Texas, and Port Allegany, Pennsylvania. The product was distinguished from competing calcium silicate insulations (such as Kaylo) by its use of amosite asbestos — the brown amphibole-form asbestos, valued at the time for its high mechanical strength and fiber length.
Unibestos was supplied in:
- Pipe covering — preformed hinged half-sections
- Block insulation — flat slabs for boilers, vessels, and ducts
- Specialty shapes — fittings and irregular surfaces
Why Unibestos Is a Particularly Concerning Product
Amosite is more biopersistent in the lung than chrysotile and is associated with elevated mesothelioma risk. Unibestos’s use of amosite — combined with its specification in confined-space applications like Navy ship engineering compartments — made it an exceptionally hazardous insulation product. Workers stripping aged Unibestos for replacement during Navy yard overhauls and industrial outages were exposed to amosite fiber at very high concentrations in poorly ventilated spaces.
The Tyler, Texas plant is itself a documented site of severe occupational exposure: Pittsburgh Corning’s Tyler facility produced Unibestos under conditions later detailed in NIOSH and academic exposure studies, with substantial mesothelioma incidence among former plant workers and their families.
Documented Use Categories
- U.S. Navy shipboard service — extensively specified for shipboard piping in destroyers, cruisers, frigates, amphibious ships, and other vessels (see Shipyard Pipe Covering, Naval Boiler Products)
- Utility and industrial power plants — high-pressure steam piping
- Petroleum refineries — process piping in high-temperature service
- Pulp and paper mills — recovery-boiler and digester service
- Chemical processing plants
Trust Funds for Unibestos Exposure
- Pittsburgh Corning Corporation Asbestos Personal Injury Trust — established through Pittsburgh Corning’s Chapter 11 reorganization to address Unibestos and related asbestos exposure claims
The Pittsburgh Corning Trust is one of the larger asbestos PI trusts in the system. Diagnosed individuals with documented industrial or naval exposure to Unibestos during the production era should consult an experienced asbestos attorney about claim eligibility.
Trades Most Exposed to Unibestos
Insulators (Heat & Frost Insulators), pipefitters, boilermakers, Navy boiler technicians and machinist’s mates, Pittsburgh Corning plant workers (Tyler and Port Allegany), demolition and overhaul crews working post-1972 legacy Unibestos.
