Yankee Dryers (Tissue Paper Machines) — Asbestos Exposure Crosswalk
What This Equipment Is
A Yankee dryer is a very large single drying cylinder — typically 12 to 22 feet in diameter — used as the primary drying surface on tissue, toweling, and crepe-paper machines. Wet sheet is pressed against the steam-heated Yankee surface, dries as it travels around the cylinder, and is creped off by a doctor blade at the take-off point. Yankee-equipped machines typically run at very high speeds and are common in tissue and away-from-home toweling production.
The Yankee is surrounded by a heated hood (often with reverse Yankee-hood designs) that recirculates heated air across the sheet to accelerate drying. The hood and the surrounding ductwork, steam supply, condensate return, and instrumentation are insulated and gasketed.
Asbestos Products Historically Used Around Yankee Dryers
| Product Category | Where on the Yankee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hood insulation | Yankee hood interior and exterior | Block insulation, asbestos cloth |
| Pipe covering | Steam supply, condensate return | Magnesia, calcium silicate |
| Doctor-blade backing | Behind the creping blade | Asbestos millboard backers in older installations |
| Steam joint packing | Rotary joints on the Yankee head | Braided asbestos rope packing |
| Gaskets | Head-cover plates, condensate connections, hood ductwork | Asbestos sheet gasket material |
| Insulating cement | Joints and irregular surfaces | Mixed dry, hand-applied |
Why Yankee-Dryer Work Was a Heavy-Exposure Activity
Yankee maintenance is high-skill, recurring work. Doctor-blade changes are routine. Hood insulation degrades from heat and moisture and requires periodic patching. Steam-joint rebuilds repack the rotary seal with fresh asbestos rope. Yankee replacement (or major rebuild) — a multi-week project performed by specialized contract crews — disturbs nearly every asbestos product family in the immediate area.
