Product Description

3M Company allegedly manufactured and distributed automotive body filler and finishing putty products that, according to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, contained asbestos fiber as a reinforcing and crack-resistance additive in the polyester resin matrix. Body filler was troweled into dented sheet metal, allowed to cure, and then aggressively sanded to feather the repair into surrounding paint — a workflow that allegedly generated substantial airborne dust from any asbestos-containing formulation.

Workers Exposed

Auto body technicians, collision repair workers, autobody sanders, and paint prep laborers allegedly encountered 3M body filler dust throughout the mixing, application, block-sanding, and DA-sanding stages. DIY auto restoration hobbyists and shade-tree body workers also allegedly used the product at home garages, typically without any respiratory protection and often in poorly ventilated spaces where fine sanding dust accumulated on clothing, benches, and floors.
