Product Description
American Vulkan Corporation supplied fluid couplings, torsional dampers, and traction-drive couplings used in marine propulsion, mining conveyor drives, and mine hoist trains. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, American Vulkan fluid couplings allegedly incorporated asbestos-fabric friction linings on the engagement plates, asbestos-fiber shaft-seal packing at the rotating joint, and compressed asbestos sheet housing gaskets on split-case joints. Rebuild kits allegedly contained asbestos friction disc and gasket material into the 1980s.
Workers Exposed
Rotating equipment mechanics, mine hoist mechanics, millwrights, and industrial maintenance technicians allegedly disturbed asbestos-fabric friction linings and asbestos-fiber shaft-seal packing when overhauling American Vulkan fluid couplings on mining conveyors, hoist drives, and marine propulsion trains.
