Product Description
The Combustion Engineering (CE) reactor vessel head sealed the top of the reactor pressure vessel and carried the control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) penetrations. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, the head-to-flange joint, the removable insulation package covering the head, and the CRDM penetration collars allegedly used asbestos-fabric blankets, asbestos-fiber sheet gaskets, and asbestos-containing packing rings rated for reactor operating temperature. During refueling outages, workers allegedly detensioned studs, lifted insulation blankets, removed the old head gasket, and reinstalled fresh asbestos-containing materials, allegedly generating respirable fiber dust in the containment refueling bay.
Combustion Engineering resolved its asbestos liability through the Combustion Engineering 524(g) Trust, which processes qualifying claims from workers allegedly exposed to CE asbestos-containing products.
Workers Exposed
Nuclear plant boilermakers allegedly worked on head detensioning and stud pulls. Mechanics and refueling outage contractors allegedly removed and reinstalled the head insulation package and CRDM seals. Health physicists allegedly surveyed the refueling bay during head lift and reinstallation.
