Hydril ram-type and annular (“bag-type”) blowout preventers allegedly used asbestos-fiber compression packing on operator shafts and asbestos-reinforced elastomer seals in the shear ram and pipe ram assemblies to contain wellbore pressure, according to publicly filed asbestos litigation records. BOP technicians allegedly disassembled Hydril stacks between wells in the shop, allegedly cutting out spent packing and seals and re-packing the operators.

Workers Exposed

BOP technicians allegedly rebuilt Hydril stacks in district shops. Oilfield mechanics and toolpushers allegedly worked on the BOP stack at the wellhead during nipple-up and function testing. Roughnecks allegedly assisted with stack handling and cleanup on the rig floor.
