Product Description
Masoneilan — historically a Dresser Industries brand and later part of Baker Hughes — has been one of the principal names in process control valves for well over half a century. The Masoneilan Camflex rotary eccentric-plug valve, along with the company’s globe control valve lines, was specified into refineries, chemical plants, gas processing plants, and power stations across the United States for continuous modulating service on hydrocarbons, steam, and chemical process fluids.
According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, Masoneilan Camflex and globe control valves were allegedly furnished originally with asbestos-fiber compression packing at the stem stuffing box. Because modulating control valves stroke continuously, packing wore rapidly and was allegedly repacked as a routine maintenance item throughout every turnaround. Bonnet and body gasketing on certain models allegedly incorporated asbestos.
Workers Exposed
Instrumentation and control technicians allegedly repacked Masoneilan Camflex and globe control valves throughout their careers. Removing the actuator, breaking down the packing follower, and extracting compressed, heat-cycled old packing allegedly released asbestos fibers directly into the technician’s breathing zone.
Refinery pipefitters, chemical-plant pipefitters, and plant maintenance mechanics allegedly serviced Masoneilan valves on continuous-duty process loops. Valve-shop technicians allegedly rebuilt Masoneilan control valves on the bench, cutting fresh asbestos packing rings from spool stock. Litigation records allege Masoneilan knew of the hazard and failed to warn foreseeable end-users.
