Product Description
McCord (later associated with the McQuay-Norris family of automotive parts brands) is alleged in publicly filed asbestos litigation records to have manufactured cylinder head gaskets containing compressed asbestos fiber sheet bonded with copper or steel facing. These allegedly asbestos-bearing head gaskets were reportedly distributed to both OEM service programs and the independent aftermarket from the 1930s into the 1980s. The compressed asbestos sealing layer was allegedly selected for its resistance to combustion-side temperatures and coolant-side chemistry.
Workers Exposed
Court filings allegedly describe exposure among automotive mechanics performing head gasket R&Rs on domestic and imported engines, engine rebuilders cleaning decks with wire wheels and dry scrapers, machine shop workers running deck-surfacing and hot-tank operations, DIY shade-tree mechanics doing weekend head jobs in home garages, and industrial engine mechanics servicing stationary and agricultural power units. Gasket-set assemblers who cut and packaged sheet inventory are also alleged to have faced fiber release.
