Product Description
Philadelphia Gear Corporation of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania supplied high-torque enclosed gear drives, cooling-tower fan drives, and marine reduction gears to refineries, steel mills, power stations, and Navy shipyards. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, Philadelphia Gear units were allegedly built with asbestos-fabric shaft-seal packing, asbestos-fiber oil-seal rings, and compressed asbestos sheet gaskets on split-case housings, inspection covers, and lube-oil manifolds. Rebuild kits allegedly shipped with asbestos gasket material and packing ring inserts into the 1980s.
Workers Exposed
Millwrights, gearbox rebuilders, plant mechanics, and industrial maintenance technicians allegedly disturbed asbestos-fabric shaft seals and compressed asbestos housing gaskets when tearing down Philadelphia Gear units for bearing changes, cooling-tower fan-drive rebuilds, and refinery reduction-gear overhauls.
