Product Description
The Terry Turbine steam-driven auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pump turbine served as a critical safety-related feedwater supply during loss-of-power events at U.S. nuclear power stations. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, Terry AFW turbines allegedly used asbestos-fabric casing lagging blankets, asbestos-braided packing in the shaft-gland stuffing boxes, and asbestos-fiber sheet gaskets at the steam-inlet flange and exhaust connections. Surveillance testing, packing rework, and lagging repair allegedly disturbed these asbestos-containing materials, generating respirable fibers inside the AFW pump room.
Workers Exposed
Nuclear plant mechanics allegedly repacked Terry Turbine glands and rebuilt the steam-inlet flange during periodic maintenance. Pipefitters/steamfitters allegedly worked on the steam-supply and exhaust piping. Operators allegedly stroked and ran the turbine during required surveillance tests. Refueling outage contractors allegedly rebuilt lagging packages during outages.
