Product Description

Thermal Ceramics, historically doing business as Morganite Ceramic Fibres, was headquartered in Augusta, Georgia and distributed the KAOWOOL family of ceramic fiber blanket, board, bulk fiber, module, and paper products. KAOWOOL was widely specified as high-temperature furnace, kiln, boiler, and industrial-insulation lining and was often installed in conjunction with, on top of, or as a replacement for prior asbestos-containing refractory insulation systems.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Thermal Ceramics / Morganite’s companion refractory-insulation product lines — and legacy formulations marketed under related trade names — contained chrysotile asbestos fiber. Workers allegedly encountered airborne asbestos when cutting KAOWOOL blanket to fit, when tearing out prior asbestos refractory linings to install KAOWOOL modules, and when working alongside insulators and bricklayers replacing asbestos block and pipe covering with ceramic-fiber alternatives.

Workers Exposed

  • Refractory workers and bricklayers who cut, layered, and installed KAOWOOL blanket, board, and modules in industrial furnaces, kilns, and boilers
  • Boilermakers and millwrights who tore out prior asbestos refractory linings during retrofits and replacements
  • Insulators who installed KAOWOOL on high-temperature piping, ducts, and vessels alongside legacy asbestos block and pipe covering
  • Steel, glass, and aluminum plant maintenance crews who patched and repaired ceramic-fiber and companion asbestos refractory linings on hot equipment
