Product Description

Voith Turbo (Heidenheim, Germany) manufactured variable-speed scoop-control fluid couplings widely installed on U.S. power-plant boiler feed pumps, forced-draft fans, mine hoist drives, and steel-mill rolling stands. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, Voith scoop-tube couplings allegedly incorporated asbestos-fiber shaft-seal packing at the rotating scoop-tube joint, asbestos-fabric seal rings on the scoop-tube stem, and compressed asbestos sheet housing gaskets on split-case joints and oil-fill ports. Rebuild kits allegedly contained asbestos packing and gasket material into the 1980s.

Workers Exposed

Rotating equipment mechanics, millwrights, plant mechanics, and industrial maintenance technicians allegedly disturbed asbestos-fiber shaft-seal packing and compressed asbestos housing gaskets when servicing Voith scoop couplings on boiler feed pump trains, FD fan drives, and mill main drives.
